Electronic signature Solution – ComSignTrust™ Desktop Introduction

A digital signature is a technology for signing electronic documents. Electronic signatures are equivalent to traditional handwritten signatures in most respects according to each country’s e-Signature law. For the receiver, the electronic signature serves as an authentication of the sender as well as an indicator that the received content has not been modified since it was signed.
ComSignTrust™ Desktop supports digital signatures in various file formats. However, not all digital readers support and display this information when the document is opened. For example, the Adobe Acrobat Reader shows digital signature details and checks signature validity against Certificate Revocation Lists (CRLs) while other PDF readers such as “Evince” or “Chrome PDF viewer” do not even notice the presence of a digital signature in the document.

ComSignTrust™ Desktop can generate a electronic signature and place it in a new or existing file, place it in an external envelope, or store it as an additional element in an XML document.
When a PDF file is signed, ComSignTrust™ Desktop creates a placeholder for the electronic signature. When the file is signed, the PKCS#7 containing the RSA raw signature is placed in this placeholder.
After a file is signed, it is possible to add or change its content only if a new PDF version is produced and signed (with a later timestamp). It is important to verify each version of the file separately. Acrobat Reader displays a “V” if the signature is successfully validated.
A similar approach is applied to new OpenXML document formats in Microsoft Office 2007. Files with extensions such as .xlsx or .docx can be signed several times and when opened, the signatures can be displayed with Microsoft Excel or Word.
